Title: Validation of Red Clover Cover Crop Nitrogen Credits for Corn

Principle Investigator: Matt Ruark

Objective: 

1) Determine the effect of red clover (as a green manure or silage crop) and tillage on corn yield.
2) Determine the effect of red clover (as a green manure or silage crop) on corn silage yield.
3) Calculate the N credit for red clover as a function of harvest/termination and tillage used.

Title: Evaluating Different In-season Nitrogen Diagnostic Approaches for Production of New Potato Cultivars in Wisconsin

Principle Investigator: Yi Wang

Objective:

1) To compare different in-season N diagnostic approaches (petiole N vs whole leaf N vs whole plant N analysis) for identifying the N status of different cultivars subjected to various N application rates.
2) To make recommendations about the optimal N fertilization for each cultivar based on different in-season N diagnostic approaches

Title: Long-term Management, Soil Health, and Optimum N Rates for Corn

Objective:

1) Evaluate optimum N rats between long-term tilled and no-till fields on similar soil types.
2) Determine the effect of long-term tillage practices on biological measures of soil health.
3) Determine the relationship between soil biological measures of soil health and optimum N rate.

Title: Developing Long-Term P&K Trials to Evaluate Sustainable Crop Production in Wisconsin

Principle Investigator: Carrie Laboski

Objective:

1) Develop replicated research plots at Arlington, Hancock, Lancaster, and Marshfield ARS that have varied soil test P and K levels that can be used over the next 10 or more years.
2) Use research plots created in objective 1 to begin re-calibration of the Bray-1 soil test for determining P and K needs of corn, soybean, and alfalfa using modern hybrids/varieties and crop production practices.

Title: Impact of Liquid Manure Application Method to Cover Crops for Increasing Dairy Manure Nutrient Utilization and Reduce Environmental Risk

Principle Investigator: Francisco Arriaga

Objective:

1) Determine if surface applying liquid dairy manure over a cover crop is as effective as injecting liquid manure in reducing phosphorus losses.
2) Compare nitrogen availability to the following crop between injecting versus surface applying liquid dairy manure to a standing cover crop in the fall.
